Eat At Your Own Risk Cookbook Launch

Our first Food Substitution Talk

On July 13th we did something we’ve never done before. Doing a book launch for our fist cookbook was a real experience. We had our first ever book party set at De Herdt Gardens in Barrhead. On top of that, our newest picture book Centered Adventure went live through Trafford Publishing. Meaning we officially have 20 books. So it was loosely a 20 book celebration as well. With that we wanted this event to be special and we threw everything and the kitchen sink into this presentation.

We presented samples from the cookbook, Tiger Nuts Flats, chocolate covered Date Caramel, Treasure Filled Cookies with Date Caramel, Mango Cookie Chocolates, Banana Balls, and Banana Oatmeal Cookies.

We came up with a giveaway draw for a coffee cup, a cookbook, and a Green Pea Makes a Flourless Cookie. I have to give credit to Douglas Specialties LTD for the coffee cup. I think looked amazing! We have never had any novelties made before so a cup was really cool step in the right direction. We’ve also never done a draw before so it was pretty cool to do that as well.

The Event

We were really nervous and practiced our presentation a few times up to the event, and we still forgot to introduce ourselves at the talk. We did cover everything from the progression of our allergies, to Flour replacement, Egg replacement, and dairy replacement. Which recipes we made most often, and the temperament of some of the flours. We also presented some of our favorite unique flours; Coffee, Lupin, Pumpkin Seed Pulp, Tiger Nut, Meat Flour and more. With some locations of where to find the products like Freson Bros, Homegrown Foods, and Nuts.com.

Experience

Public speaking in a teaching form isn’t something we do a whole lot of. Our first presentation about authoring was back in 2015 the night Justin Trudeau was first announced Prime Minister of Canada and a second talk happened shortly after.

Genuinely we didn’t know what to expect nor did we know how many people would be interested in a food substitutions talk. We guessed maybe 30 people would be interested. The most we had at any one time was 6. Which was perfect as we were all able to sit around a picnic table. When someone would have to leave someone would show up to join the conversation. A fitting down to earth talk about food allergies. It wasn’t too hot or too cold as the greenhouse can get overly warm sometimes. We never expected our 11am to 2pm event to last until 5pm. When I look back at my 2015 Author talks, I know that I would do it completely different. As time passes we are planning on having more Food Substitution talks and probably author talks.

Thank you for your time. Chance Hansen

Keep Smiling!
